Approval and Enrollment Process for Internship Credit and/or Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

AEROENG 197 Undergraduate Aerospace Engineering Field Studies – 0.5 to 4 units

AEROENG 197 Undergraduate Aerospace Engineering Field Studies – 0.5 to 4 units: Supervised field experience relative to specific aspects of practice in aerospace engineering. Under guidance of a faculty member, the student will work in government or industry, primarily in an internship setting or related type of short-time project.

Emphasis is placed on attaining practical experience in the aerospace engineering field.

If you are a declared Aerospace Engineering major and will be conducting an internship related to the study of aerospace engineering, you may be eligible to receive internship credit by enrolling in AEROENG 197.

AEROENG 197 is offered on a P/NP only basis.

Students must make any enrollment changes for AEROENG 197 by the regular campus add/drop deadlines.

Enrollment in AEROENG 197 during Summer Session is subject to regular summer enrollment fees.

There are 2 types of permission request to enroll in AEROENG 197: As an international student requiring internship credit through Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or a regular student (non-international student) needing course credit for field study or internship work.

Enrollment Steps in Curricular Practical Training (CPT) for International Students in the Aerospace Engineering (AE) Major:

Please complete the Berkeley International Office’s online CPT request form . CPT is a type of off-campus work permission for F-1 international students who are currently pursuing study programs in the United States and want to gain experience in their fields of study. When prompted, enter “Karren Tanisaki” with the email address “karren@berkeley.edu” for the “advisor” contact information. The course number is “AEROENG 197.” This will generate an automatic request to us.
Email Professor Panos Papadopoulos (panos@berkeley.edu), Aerospace Engineering (AE) Faculty Director, copying to Karren Tanisaki (karren@berkeley.edu), with the following information: Full name, student ID number, a brief description of your internship duties and how they relate to the AE major, number of units desired and proof of your employment (such as an offer letter).
Unit value designation: Typically 0.5 units in the summer and 1 unit in Fall or Spring semester is recommended.

For international students requesting CPT, typically 0.5 units in the summer and 1 unit in Fall or Spring semester is recommended.

Once your request for CPT enrollment is approved by the AE Faculty Advisor, you will receive information about enrolling in AEROENG 197.

Enrollment steps for regular students (non-international students) in the AE major wishing to receive course credit for their internship work:

Please email Professor Panos Papadopoulos at panos@berkeley.edu, copying karren@berkeley.edu with the following information: Full name, student ID number, a brief description of your internship duties and how they relate to the AE major, number of units desired and proof of your employment (such as an offer letter).

Unit value designation: 1 to 4 units can be granted depending on the number of hours of work. One unit is notionally equivalent to an average of three hours of effort per week throughout a 14-week semester. Assigned unit value must be approved ahead of time by Professor Panos Papadopoulos as the faculty sponsor.

Once your field study proposal is approved by Professor Papadopoulos, you will receive information about enrolling in AEROENG 197.
