Scott J. McCormack

Assistant Professor, Materials Science and Engineering

Email: sjmccorm@berkeley.edu

381 Hearst Memorial Mining Building
Berkeley, CA 94720-1760

Scott J. McCormack is an experimental phase diagram cartographer. Just like the explorers of the 15th century, mapping potential energy in terms of topography in maps for navigation, we map the chemical potential of atoms in materials systems in terms of phase boundaries and stability to form phase diagrams (maps) to navigate materials engineering, manufacturing and minerals processing. In particular, the McCormack Laboratory has been focusing on mapping stability in: (i) high entropy and entropy stabilized materials, (ii) high temperature materials (borides, carbides, and refractory metals) and (iii) actinide materials (uranium and plutonium). These phase diagrams will be used to guide design of next generation material systems for: (i) hypersonic platforms, (ii) fission/fusion reactors and (iii) space exploration.
