Aerospace Engineering Minor

Students can receive an Aerospace Engineering (AE) minor by successfully completing the following courses:

AEROENG C127/MECENG C127: Introduction to Composite Materials
AEROENG C136/MECENG C136: Dynamics and Control of Autonomous Flight
MECENG 163: Engineering Aerodynamics or AEROENG C162/MECENGC162: Introduction to Flight Mechanics

and their respective prerequisites:

MECENG C85: Introduction to Solid Mechanics
MECENG 106: Fluid Mechanics
MECENG 132: Dynamic Systems and Feedback

Application and Declaration Process

Students can declare their Aerospace Engineering (AE) minor after completing the following three (3) prerequisite courses:

  • MECENG C85: Introduction to Solid Mechanics
  • MECENG 106: Fluid Mechanics
  • MECENG 132: Dynamic Systems and Feedback

Students must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 at the time of their application, as well as a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the prerequisite courses in order to declare and be admitted to the AE Minor program. To declare your intention to pursue the AE minor, please use your Berkeley email address/Calnet ID and fill out the AE Minor application-to-declare form. The deadline to submit an application is the last day of classes prior to a student’s expected graduation term (e.g. last day of classes in Fall 2025 semester for those graduating in Spring 2026). If there are any prerequisite courses in progress being taken in the semester before the expected graduation term, final grades and GPA for the prerequisite courses will be verified to determine eligibility before processing the application to declare the AE Minor program. Late applications will not be considered. Students must have declared the minor no later than the first day of instruction of their expected graduation term.

Policies for Completion and Certification of Minor Program

The policies detailed below are general guidelines. However, Aerospace Engineering (AE) will not confirm adherence to any policies dictated by a candidate’s major program. AE will confirm only that you have completed the three (3) prerequisite courses (for admission to the AE minor) and that you later satisfied the remaining three upper division courses (for completion of the AE minor). AE will not confirm any overlap in coursework and whether this is allowed by your major program. Candidates are strongly encouraged to submit a course study plan to their major advisors to confirm that they are on track to satisfy both major and minor requirements. Note upper-division courses used to satisfy the AE minor must be distinct and cannot overlap with the requirements of any other minor program (e.g. EECS minor).

Mechanical Engineering (ME) Majors ONLY are allowed to overlap the 3 prerequisite courses. ME students will receive the minor by successfully completing the 3 prerequisite courses and the following 3 upper division courses:

  • AEROENG C127/MECENG C127: Introduction to Composite Materials
  • AEROENG C136/MECENG C136: Dynamics and Control of Autonomous Flight
  • MECENG 163: Engineering Aerodynamics or MECENG C162/AEROENG C162: Introduction to Flight Mechanics

These three upper division ME courses cannot overlap or be used towards your ME Technical Electives for the ME major. ME students must take three (3) additional Technical Electives and be aware that 24 units are required to complete both the ME major and the AE minor together.  If this is not attainable, please apply for the AE concentration instead within the ME major. Please confirm with your ESS adviser that your plan for completing all the needed technical electives for ME and the AE minor is consistent with the above policy.

For non-ME majors, a maximum of only one upper division course (numbered 100+) can be counted toward both the AE minor and major. There are no restrictions of how many lower division courses overlap. This is general guidance, and you should confirm with your major advisor whether such an overlap is allowed and whether there any exist any other constraints that might affect conferral of the AE minor. Students must ensure the AE upper-division courses are not double-counted toward multiple minor programs.

Completing the AE minor: All courses taken to fulfill the minor requirements must be taken for a letter grade. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 in all of the minor courses at the time of graduation. Completion of the minor cannot delay a student’s graduation. Note that The AE Minor Program will confer the minor within the same semester students intend to graduate (or expected graduation term – EGT) and not earlier, even if all AE minor requirements have already been completed in the semester(s) before. The Confirmation of Completion of Minor Form must be submitted no later than the last day of classes of the student’s EGT. For example, students with EGT in Spring 2026, the form must be submitted by May 1, 2026. The AE Minor Program will verify the successful completion of the remaining AE Minor coursework before processing the request to certify the AE Minor completion in CalCentral. This can take at least two weeks or more after the end of the term, depending on when the final grades are posted. Please note that though the AE Student Services Advisor may receive and sign off on a candidate’s Completion of Minor Form, it is incumbent upon the candidate to ensure that minor requirements do not conflict with major requirements by speaking to their major advisor. Receipt of the Completion of Minor Form does not guarantee minor conferral. A notation in the memorandum section of the student’s transcript will indicate completion of the AE minor.
